I-81 Repair

<p><b>LBC Superintendent:</b> Alan Slater</p>
<p><b>Major Work:</b> Deck repairs, rapid set latex overlays, and substructure repairs using gunite along the I-81 corridor in Botetourt County. </p>

<p><b>Biggest Challenges:</b> Working safely through the night in a high traffic area with a downgrade, affecting truck speed. With a compressed schedule with heavy fines looming, we finished the project with speed and integrity.

Rt. 122, Hales Ford Bridge

<p><b>Major Work:</b> Deck repairs, rapid set latex overlays, substructure repairs with gunite</p>

<p><b>Biggest Challenges:</b> The narrow workspace on this bridge made doing most of the required work a challenge. Also, the need to keep any materials or debris from falling into Smith Mountain Lake was a priority for the crews working there. Because this bridge is on a main road for locals and weekend visitors, completing the job as fast as possible was important to Lanford. Working with VDOT, they changed some work processes, which expedited the completion date considerable. By doing so, it was a win-win for the people using the road, the owner, and Lanford Brothers.

Greensboro, VA

<p><b>Major Work: </b>Latex Modified Concrete Overlay</p>

<p><b>Biggest Challenges:</b> Occasionally, when constructing a new bridge, issues arise from mistakes in the plans or fabrication of materials which causes the riding surface to be out of line. In this case, the steel beams supporting the concrete deck settled too far causing a dip in the span. Lanford Brothers was called in to fix this problem by using a thin bonded overlay to correct the grade and make the bridge ride smooth. </p>

<p><b>Major Work:</b> Regional bridge maintenance contract including pothole repairs, rapid set overlays, substructure repairs with gunite</p>

<p><b>Biggest Challenges: </b> Multiple locations – constantly changing work conditions, access to complete the substructure work, working from heights, constantly working overhead. As the pictures show, substructure work is demanding. Our crews do it every day while giving the owner a quality job that should keep these bridges in service for years to come.
